What is a philanthropy?
Alpha Chi Omega's "Rodeo Days" philanthropy is a weeklong event. The main goal is to have fun activities while raising money for a cause. Every fraternity is invited to participate with a $100 entrance fee. All of the ladies in the house, with the exception of the seniors, act as coaches for the fraternities and help prepare them for events that are held that weekend. The events change every year but usually include a lip sync contest, a sporting event and either a pie-eating contest, obstacle course, or trivia game. Points are earned by the fraternities that earn the top places in each event. The Alpha Chi Omega seniors act as the judges and fraternities can also earn points by capturing the judges' hats and bandanas. At the end of the weekend, all of the points are added up and first through fourth places are awarded to the fraternities. Rodeo Days is a very exciting time of the year for all of the girls in the house and we look forward to it every year!
At the 1992 national convention, Alpha Chi Omega delegates voted to adopt the Support of Victims of Domestic Violence as our national altruism.
The money raised at Rodeo Days supports both the Alpha Chi Omega Foundation and the Sojourner Center, a local domestic violence shelter. Additionally, we assist these charities by volunteering our time and collecting goods through food and clothing drives. In the past ladies of Alpha Chi Omega painted and cleaned rooms at the Sojourner center and helped at holiday events. This year Alpha Chi Omega will continue to incorporate philanthropy into our lives by working more closely with the Sojourner Center in Phoenix.
